This Blog Post is a tutorial about how to install a Profile Box Button Widget to your Facebook Profile. By installing the Profile Box Application you are able to add custom html to your facebook profile page. By inserting links to your on-line profiles and copying the code in the post below you will be able to give your friends an easy way to connect with you on Twitter, Linkedin, and friendfeed.

When the widget is installed it will look like this:

The first thing you will need to do to install the Facebook Profile Box Button Widget is to search for and find the “Profile Box” application

search-for-profile-box

Next you will need to install the “Profile Box” Application. Once “Profile Box” installed click on “Go to Application” (see image below)

After you click “Go to the Application” you will see a text box where you can insert code. This box is shown in the image below.

Into the text box shown above you want to copy the following code:

<div align="center">

<a href="http://www.twitter.com/yourtwitterusername">
<img src="http://garin.me/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/facebook-widget-1.png">
</a>

<a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/yourname">
<img src="http://garin.me/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/facebook-widget-2.png">
</a>

<a href="http://friendfeed.com/yourffusername">
<img src="http://garin.me/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/facebook-widget-3.png">
</a>

<a href="http://bit.ly/p4lBI">
<img src="http://garin.me/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/facebook-widget-4.png"/>
</a>

</div>

You will need to make one simple change to the code. Switch the below to reflect your personal information:

http://friendfeed.com/yourffusername
(example: http://friendfeed.com/GarinKilpatrick)

http://www.twitter.com/yourtwitterusername

(example: http://www.twitter.com/GarinKilpatrick)

http://www.linkedin.com/in/yourname

(example: http://www.linkedin.com/in/GarinKilpatrick)

Once you have entered in custom links to your on-line profiles and copied the code click “Submit” and this will add the Widget to your Facebook profile!

If you do not have twitter, linkedin, or friendfeed I recommend you sign up! If you do not have time to sign up though simply delete the block of code containing the word twitter, friendfeed, or linkedin. You can always refer back to this post for the code needed to install a button you do not have at a later date.

I may create additional buttons if there is demand. What kind of buttons would you like to see available for this widget to make it better?

Creating the Perfect Facebook Profile

30 Apr

By: Eric Vogel

You should ask yourself these questions before setting up your Facebook Profile:

Who do I want others to view me as?

What am I all about?

What is my passion?

What would people want to know about me?

Your profile is very important in portraying exactly how you want people to view you. For instance, if you are using Facebook more as a business networking tool you would want to portray a professional look and feel to your profile. The information below is for people who are using Facebook for business and networking.

Here are 7 Keys for the perfect Facebook profile:

1. Profile Picture

If you are using Facebook for business and networking I suggest you put a professional looking photo as your main profile picture. This provides a professional feel and depicts who you are as a business person.
Your profile picture should be centered and close enough to see your pretty face It makes it more personal. People can now feel more connected to you by your picture, given, they have not met you in person.
Some other obvious pointers: Put up sharp clear pictures, crop the shot so you are centered.
Don’t forget to adjust your thumbnail Facebook picture as well. This is the picture that shows up every time you write, except with rounded corners and made smaller.

2. The Info Box

picture-7

The info box is directly under your profile picture. This is the first thing most people will view after seeing your picture. It is directly below the Edit My Profile link under your profile picture.

This box is the first thing you will want to concentrate on when setting up a profile. You should put a summary of what you do or what is most important to you. Be brief yet informative enough to draw interest and excitement!

3. Info Tab

Fill out as much as you can in the information tab sections. The more that people learn about you the more connected they will feel. Think about the kinds of information you would have in an initial face-to-face conversation with someone during a first time meeting. This is the kind of information you’ll want to put here. Keep it brief, though. People on the internet have short attention span.

Be sure to mention any websites you have in the websites section. You will want to list your websites below one another if you have more than one.

You will also want the web addresses to be visible on the sidebar’s large information box. To accomplish this,
check the box next to website when you click the edit button in the corner of the large information box.

4. Groups

Join groups of interest. Keep in mind that the groups you join will become a part of your Facebook identity. So, make sure that those you join are a good representation of how you want to be portrayed on Facebook. You can also find friends in these groups and people can find you as well. This could lead to some quality business and friend relationships.
If you have a business, I would also recommend starting your own group.

5. Applications

For the most part, applications just cause clutter to your Facebook profile. There are a few useful ones but most are not needed if you are looking for the clean professional look. Just remember you want to portray what YOU are
all about and people should be able to see this from a quick glance at your profile.

6. Key Word Searches

Find people that have the same profile words that you do by clicking on key words in your profile. For example, one of your interests may be entrepreneurship. When you click this word in your profile it will bring up others in the Facebook community with entrepreneurship in their profile as well. At this point you can message them or read more about them if you would like. This could possibly lead to a Facebook friend!

7. Preferences

It is very important to check your profile preferences and settings. There is a lot you can do with your profile that you may not be aware of.
-Adjust your profile preferences by going to settings -> privacy settings -> profile
(The following settings are recommended if you would like a more open profile for most everyone to view)

Add HTML to your Facebook Profile Sidebar

I recently discovered the Profile HTML Application when I noticed one of my friends had a “Subscribe by E-Mail” form on their Profile page.  I thought this was a great idea, so I decided to put the application to work for myself as well.  Although the name of this Application is “Profile HTML” it also allows custom HTML to be inserted onto Facebook pages.

In what seemed like no time at all I had copied my Feedburner e-mail subscribe form into my Facebook profile sidebar, and now my friends can easily subscribe to my blog right on my Facebook profile!

Now I am using this App to insert buttons linking my different profiles around the web.

I used the Profile Tab to insert my FriendFeed lifestream.

Profile HTML gives you the power to create the equivalent of a permanent ad on your profile, or Facebook page.   Profile HTML worked great for me, and I am curious to hear about how others are using it as well!
