Facebook Places Supplies Serendipity

20 Aug

Yesterday Facebook Launched Facebook Places.

I can already hear the worriers screaming about how terrible this is, because places is the ultimate stalkers tool.

But seriously.  Watch the video below.  When I did I thought of the millions of meetings that will take place serendipitously thanks to this new innovation.  I am not one to look a gift horse in the mouth.  I think places is a great thing.

This is not just a social innovation, but also a new way for businesses to reach out to customers in the immediate area.  Already foursquare facilitates special offers for it’s users with deals such as free lattes for foursquare mayors of certain Starbucks locations.

Once everyone has places, imagine how interaction will change.  The world will have another means become more social.  I think that this is the kind of “openness” that Mark Zuckerberg is talking about.  The kind that improves lives.

You might think that facebook places serves stalkers, but it is my position that this small risk is far outweighed by the immense value in the serendipity places will supply.

A Review of The Facebook Effect

2 Aug

By: Kelly Ann Carpentier

David Kirkpatrick

David Kirkpatrick

David Kirkpatrick is, no doubt, a brilliant writer. He clearly knows a thing or two about writing a good story. The Facebook Effect is no exception. The only problem that I had with this book was that is seems like the same story could’ve been told in 100 or less pages.

Had I not been writing a review of this book, I probably would’ve put the book down after the first chapter. The tale of Facebook, and the making of what we know it to be now, is astonishingly simple, and can easily be straight from the files of ‘why didn’t I think of that?’

Kirkpatrick’s use of overly descriptive detail regarding characteristics of the major players can easily be found as offensive and derogatory. To be that descriptive is not necessary, and is yet another factor that takes away from the power of everything fascinating about Facebook.

If one of Kirkpatrick’s goals in the book was to create sympathy for the often criticized and embattled Facebook Founder, Mark Zuckerberg, he certainly put his best foot forward. But at the same time, Kirkpatrick describes Zuckerberg as a person with revolting hygiene and sanitation habits, who has no manners, and is completely void of consideration for others. In addition, Zuckerberg is painted as narcissistic and exuding hubris at best.  This double-sided description of all things Zuckerberg seems carefully balanced and even a bit strategic.

Mark Zuckerberg wins the hearts of the intellects with reclusive tendencies everywhere. How he deals with his fame and fortune in the decades to come will be very interesting to watch unfold.

10 Great Ways To Promote Your facebook Page

2 Jun

By: Kelly Ann Carpentier

The presence of facebook in Social Media is growing daily, which means that the number of prospective fans for you and your business is growing just as fast. But how do you keep up? One of the hottest things going in marketing right now is a Facebook Page. Here are 10 different methods you can use to promote and grow your Facebook community:

1. Promote your page with a widget

It sounds easy enough but I can’t tell you how many people still don’t do this. You can integrate facebook with your site using the “Like” widget. People who visit your blog won’t know that you have a fan page until you tell. Don’t miss out on this prime opportunity to convert your blog readers into facebook fans!

2. Put up a featured discussion in your LinkedIn group

If you don’t have a LinkedIn group for your industry, make one. It’s your way to demonstrate your expertise, thereby driving business to your company.

This discussion can lead to opening the doors to a higher level of customer service that you might not have otherwise had.

3. Link to your Facebook page on your LinkedIn profile

One of the best places to promote your facebook page do that is in the description of your current position. When you describe your position and the company, put a hyperlink to the fan page at the bottom of the description.

If you don’t have a LinkedIn profile, you should get one. Linkedin is one of the best ways to network on a global basis and draw business to your company.
